He vehemently opposed slavery and discrimination against African-Americans, and fought hard to secure their rights during the Reconstruction era. The Thaddeus Stevens Society is a non-profit group started in 1999 to promote the memory of Thaddeus Stevens, the most powerful congressman during and after the Civil War and a champion of freedom and equality. The only fault I find with Levine’s work is it is a strictly political biography; precious little appears in regard to Stevens’ personal life, which would have made a fuller rounder biography.
